The movies have always had a vexed relationship with the naked human body, particularly because it's widely understood to be a source of both desire and vulnerability. Indeed, it's often remarkable when a given actor decides to go nude for a film, precisely because doing so poses a host of ethical and physical challenges.

Many stars have been understandably reluctant to take this step, but those who stripped down have been very forthcoming about their experiences. These accounts shed fascinating light on the ways actors approach their craft when it comes to rendering themselves up to the gaze of the camera and the viewer.

  • While the R-rated sex comedy might not be as common or as popular as it was in earlier decades, it experienced a bit of a resurgence in 2023 thanks to films like No Hard Feelings. Jennifer Lawrence stars as Maddie Barker, a young woman recruited by a middle-aged couple to seduce their son and help him overcome his anxieties. In one of the most hilarious scenes, Maddie fights with a group of teens on the beach, all while in the nude.

Some actors of Lawrence’s stature might balk at baring it all for the camera, but she has been quite open about how much she enjoyed it

Everyone in my life and my team is doing the right thing and going, “Are you sure? Are you sure? Are you sure?” I didn’t even have a second thought. It was hilarious to me.

  • There’s no question Fast Times at Ridgemont High remains an enduringly popular high school film. It's one of those coming-of-age comedies that managed to have the right mix of director (Amy Heckerling), writer (Cameron Crowe), and actors (many, including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Phoebe Cates, and Sean Penn). Of course, since it was released in the 1980s, there was significant female nudity, including one scene where Linda Barrett (Cates) ends up taking off her bikini.

Looking back, Cates was remarkably unfazed about the experience

I was only 17 when I did my nude scenes in Paradise. They were serious and more difficult because they were not easily justified. But the topless scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High was funny, which made it easy. In this business, if a girl wants a career, she has to be willing to strip. If you've got a good bod, then why not show it?

  • While audiences might be more likely to recognize Heather Graham for being in in the hit comedy Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, she also made a memorable appearance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights. The 1997 period dramedy focuses on the porn industry of the 1970s and ‘80s, and while Mark Wahlberg’s Dirk Diggler is the center of the film, Graham’s character Brandy has a nude scene.

As a young actor, Graham found the experience more than a little frightening, as she remarked in an interview

That was my first time, and I was so nervous about it. But at that point in my career I was also like, “Beggars can't be choosers.” It was a great script and Paul was an amazing talent. I had a great time making that movie even though it was terrifying doing a nude scene.

  • The 1990s was a decade in which the erotic thriller flourished, and few have elicited as much commentary (and often condemnation) as Paul Verhoeven’s Basic Instinct. In the film, Sharon Stone plays the sultry femme fatale Catherine Tramell, who exercises her wiles on detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas).

The film’s most famous scene is where Tramell flashes her private parts. Stone has been frank about how this was filmed without her knowledge. As she remarked in an interview

After we shot Basic Instinct, I got called in to see it. Not on my own with the director, as one would anticipate, given the situation that has given us all pause… but with a room full of agents and lawyers, most of whom had nothing to do with the project. That was how I saw my vagina-shot for the first time, long after I'd been told, “We can’t see anything - I just need you to remove your panties, as the white is reflecting the light, so we know you have panties on.” Yes, there have been many points of view on this topic, but since I'm the one with the vagina in question, let me say: The other points of view are bullsh*t.

  • One need look no further than her eclectic filmography to see how versatile and talented Halle Berry is - as capable of appearing in a hard-hitting drama as she is in a superhero franchise. For many, her appearance in Monster’s Ball, which earned her an Oscar, remains one of her most noteworthy performances.

In the 2001 film, she has strong chemistry with co-star Billy Bob Thornton, and the two share a sex scene that leaves very little to the imagination. While some female stars might have been uncomfortable appearing nude with a male co-star, Berry has made a point of asserting her comfort level with Thornton, and she particularly noted how their secure marriages enabled a particular form of emotional safety and intimacy:

I didn’t feel like [Thornton] would use this scene as a way to exploit the situation and take advantage of me, and I don’t think he felt that, either.

  • For much of the 1990s, Demi Moore was one of the most in-demand talents in Hollywood, thanks to her status as a sex symbol and her successful appearances in such films as Ghost and A Few Good Men. However, 1996's Striptease ended up being a turning point in her career, due in part to critical savaging.

Given its title, it’s unsurprising it featured Moore in a nude scene, and she endured quite a lot of judgment for her decision to appear in Striptease. When asked about the inherent double standard of such criticisms, she responded

There are so many layers to that, of the judgment placed on that kind of woman, which overshadowed why I found the story interesting in the first place. It was just about a mother trying to survive and not lose her daughter. But it came with a lot of judgment. I faced a lot of judgment.
