While home can refer to a physical location, many individuals feel most at home around people they care about. The same principle holds true for characters, which is why viewers love returning to comforting TV shows to spend time with the fictional people they love. If any era of television understood this the most, it was the '90s.

‘90s sitcom families have a special way of connecting with viewers, as if they’re inviting everyone watching to become a part of their clan. These characters become the audience's relatives, too, as everyone builds a bond over the situational comedy and heartfelt moments on screen.

To honor that special feeling, look back at some of the greatest '90s families from sitcoms (even the underrated ones), who's a part of them, and what makes them so special.

  • The Matthewses - 'Boy Meets World'

The Family: No one embodies suburban utopia quite like the Matthews family. The youngest son, Cory, is close to both his parents, Amy and Alan, as well as his younger sister, Morgan, and older brother, Eric. Yes, they experience their share of challenges and setbacks as individuals and a family, but their unit never cracks. It's the one constant in Boy Meets World.

What Makes Them Great: The Matthews aren't only a great family to each other, but also to their friends. When Cory's best friend, Shawn Hunter, finds himself in trouble throughout the series, Alan isn't afraid to stand up for his son's friend and protect him from danger. They're the standard of compassion and decency for every family and human being.

    • Actors: Ben Savage, William Daniels, Betsy Randle, Will Friedle, Rider Strong
    • Premiered: September 24, 1993

    Great family?
  • The Taylors - 'Home Improvement'

The Family: Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor loves to fix things; however, his family proves to be his biggest challenge yet. Along with his wife, Jill, they try to deal with the wonders of having three young sons - Brad, Randy, and Mark - who are more than a handful for Tim and his wife.

What Makes Them Great: Each member of the Taylor family is different, but they learn how to navigate life together. It's also fun to watch as Tim believes he has the answers to everything and can solve every problem with his fix-it attitude; however, in reality, he is more than capable of making mistakes at every turn.

    • Actors: Tim Allen, Patricia Richardson, Earl Hindman, Zachery Ty Bryan, Taran Noah Smith
    • Premiered: September 17, 1991

    Great family?
  • The Formans - 'That 70's Show'

The Family: Kitty and Red Forman are well aware of what happens under their roof, and the shenanigans their children, Laurie and Eric, get up to - especially Eric. Though Red's eternal grouchiness is his most notable trait, he holds a soft spot for Eric and his friends, even letting Steven Hyde move into the home. Plus, who couldn't love Kitty as a mother figure? She's the best.

What Makes Them Great: Red doesn't show too much in the way of emotion (other than irritation), while Kitty more than makes up for the both of them. Despite this, the Forman home harbors an incredible warmth, automatically becoming the hub for other neighborhood teens to come together and hang out.

    • Actors: Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson, Laura Prepon
    • Premiered: August 23, 1998

    Great family?
  • The Bankses - 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air'

The Family: Phil and Vivian Banks open their home to their nephew, Will Smith, to stay with them after he gets into “one little fight” and his mom says, “You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air.” Despite not having an affluent upbringing, Will soon fits in with his cousins, Ashley, Hilary, and Carlton. They all care for each other deeply, but it's safe to say that Will and Carlton are probably the closest here.

What Makes Them Great: The Banks family members are always there for each other through thick and thin. Even though Uncle Phil comes across as stern and a disciplinarian, he's nothing but a good family man under it all. Both he and Vivian know when to lead with tough love or when to put their arms around the kids to tell them that everything will be okay.

    • Actors: Will Smith, James Avery, Daphne Maxwell-Reid, Alfonso Ribeiro, Janet Hubert
    • Premiered: September 10, 1990

    Great family?
  • The Bundys - 'Married... with Children'

The Family: When it comes to dysfunctional families, it doesn't get more complicated than the Bundys. Patriarch Al loves nothing more than being left alone to sit on his couch and ponder what he could have made of his life, while his wife Peggy wants him to make more cash to fund her lifestyle. Then, there are the kids, ditzy Kelly and wise-cracking Bud, who are on the same road to nowhere like their parents.

What Makes Them Great: While there's resentment among the Bundys for what they don't have, and they never miss a beat to express what they really think about each other, they also put aside their differences when it really matters. At the end of the day, they care about each other, and their dysfunction, in many ways, makes them more relatable than some of the more sunny, sweet sitcom families out there.

    • Actors: Ed O'Neill, Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate, David Faustino, Amanda Bearse
    • Premiered: April 5, 1987

  • The Tanners - 'Full House'

The Family: The title Full House isn't an exaggeration. While widower Danny raises his three daughters - D.J., Stephanie, and Michelle - in the home, he enlists the help of his brother-in-law, Jesse, and friend, Joey, to manage both the home and kids. Ultimately, the family grows as Jesse gets married and has his own kids, too.

What Makes Them Great: Like the opening theme's song says, "Everywhere you look, everywhere you go, there's a heart, a hand to hold onto." This family is wholesome and comforting, making every moment feel that much more cherished and right in the feels. It's amazing to see the kids grow up over the course of the show, and to even see some of the characters continue their journey on the follow-up show Fuller House.

    • Actors: John Stamos, Bob Saget, Dave Coulier, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin
