While some actors and musicians are very private about their love life, others flaunt their significant others and show them off on the red carpet and at various prestigious events. That is, until the relationship goes sour, and they find themselves breaking down mid-interview following nosy questions about what went wrong.
On rare occasions, certain celebrities who dated or married one another still managed to remain civil and friendly after calling it quits, such as Heidi Klum and Seal, or Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney. Others, though, made headlines with their lawsuits and mutual public accusations, like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
The following celeb couples broke up and got back together several times. Did you root for them, or do you think they're better off solo?

Elizabeth Taylor And Richard Burton
Elizabeth Taylor had seven husbands and numerous flings, but her tumultuous love story with fellow stage and movie icon Richard Burton is one for the books.
They were both married to other people when they first began their affair in 1962, on the set of Cleopatra, but the spark was definitely there, both on and offscreen. Their passion was intense and violent, and they were both heavy drinkers and partygoers, resulting in public displays of affection as well as verbal and physical disputes. After their respective divorces were finalized, they got hitched on March 15, 1964 in Montreal, only to separate 10 years later. They then remarried from 1975 to 1976 before divorcing again. The pair never officially got back together, despite the rumors.
Their on-again, off-again relationship fascinated the media and their fans alike, and it is said that before his death in 1984, Burton wrote Taylor a letter asking for one last chance.

Rita Moreno And Marlon Brando
Some relationships are so toxic they can lead to abuse and, sometimes, self-harm. This was the case with Rita Moreno, the iconic actress, dancer, and singer, and Marlon Brando, whose influential career spanned 60 years.
The pair met in 1954 on the set of Désirée, in which Brando was playing Napoleon, and their attraction was mutual. Their rocky, on-and-off passion lasted eight years, despite Brando’s constant infidelities. The actress ultimately spiraled when she got pregnant and Brando made her get an abortion, prompting her to try to take her own life. Years later, the actress candidly confessed to Jessica Chastain in a chat for Variety:
It was exciting to be with Marlon. Oh, my God, it was exciting. He was extraordinary in many, many ways, but he was a bad guy. He was a bad guy when it came to women. I was such a different person then.

Jennifer Lopez And Ben Affleck
Whether it be Bennifer or Bennifer 2.0, that’s one couple that has driven the paparazzi into a frenzy. Affleck and Lopez allegedly began their romance on the set of Gigli in 2002, while the singer-actress was still married to dancer Cris Judd. Though they were set to wed in September 2003, they broke up the following year, only to shock the world by reuniting in 2021. The pair was seen celebrating Lopez’s 52nd birthday in glamorous Saint Tropez and looked very happy.
When asked about their rekindled romance, Lopez told People:
We're older now, we're smarter, we have more experience, we're at different places in our lives, we have kids now, and we have to be very conscious of those things.
They got hitched in July 2022 and honeymooned in Italy. Their relationship seemed to be doing great for a while, PDA and matching tattoos included - until rumors of their split started in May 2024. At the time of writing, they seem to be flying solo, though their divorce hasn't been officially announced yet. Meanwhile, Affleck has been spotted without his wedding ring, they didn’t spend the Fourth of July or their anniversary together, and they’ve been living separately after putting their mansion on the market. That said, Lopez did visit Affleck at his rental home in LA on August 15, 2024 to wish him a happy birthday. Is this truly the end, or will we be getting a Bennifer 3.0 in the future?

Miley Cyrus And Liam Hemsworth
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth met in June 2009, on the set of the young romance flick The Last Song. They were frequently spotted hanging out together until the singer made it official during a red carpet interview with, “Me and my boyfriend went on a bike ride.”
Due to Cyrus’s busy schedule and Hemsworth’s alleged cheating, though, the pair broke up in August 2010. A month later, they rekindled their flame, only to split up again in November. Then, in March 2011, reports emerged that they were back on again, and they started attending events together in December 2011. After denying engagement rumors, the couple finally confirmed it in June 2012, but their romance took a hit when Cyrus was accused of cheating with Gossip Girl actor Ed Westwick in February 2013, which she denied. She was later spotted without her ring; yet, after months of speculation, the pair attended the premiere of Paranoid together in August 2013. Following the pop star’s provocative performance at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, which Hemsworth reportedly called “mortifying,” they eventually decided to separate.
Fast-forward to January 2016: Cyrus was photographed shopping with Elsa Pataky, Chris Hemsworth’s wife. Throughout the month, she was seen sporting her engagement ring again, but she didn't appear with Hemsworth until April. Following months of endearing social media posts, Cyrus confirmed their marriage in December 2018, only to post herself on Instagram without her ring on August 10, 2019.
A rep for Cyrus later told People:
Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers.

Chloë Grace Moretz And Brooklyn Beckham
Chloë Grace Moretz And Brooklyn Beckham apparently met at Paris Fashion Week in 2014 and first appeared together in July while on a skating date in LA. The actress made vague comments during her interviews, though, until Beckham was spotted in October 2015 with a French model. He wasn't seen with Moretz again until January 21, 2016, and, a few months later, both made their relationship Instagram official.
In September 2016, rumors emerged that they broke up again following a fight at a concert, only to get back together around March 2017, as per their Instagram posts. Finally, in April 2018, Beckham was photographed kissing a Playboy model, signaling the end of their coupling.
Bella Hadid And The Weeknd
The highly publicized on-and-off relationship between model Bella Hadid and musician The Weeknd started in 2015, when the singer contacted Hadid to appear on the cover of an album (she turned him down). They sparked dating rumors at Coachella in April, but didn't make it official until August 11, at Joe Jonas’s birthday bash. In December 2015, Hadid starred in the music video for “In the Night,” and they were later be seen cuddling at various events and private outings.
Their first breakup occurred by November 2016 due to conflicting schedules, as per an official statement, but they remained friends and shared the runway at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. By the end of January 2017, though, the singer had moved on with Selena Gomez, prompting Hadid to confess to Teen Vogue:
As an outsider, you might think I handled it so well, but it’s always in your heart, and you always feel it very heavily… But I’ll always respect him, and I’ll always love him.
Following his split from Gomez, The Weekend cozied up to Hadid again on April 13, 2018 at Coachella, and the pair were photographed kissing at Cannes a month later. Many documented trips and events later, they separated for good in August 2019.
