Metroidvania has become one of the most popular video game genres for indie developers to create games around, and the wealth of incredible PS5 metroidvania games is certainly proof of that. The original PlayStation did after all help define this now popular category of games when Symphony of the Night was released in 1997 - it's the game that is referenced in the “vania” part of metroidvania, with the first half obviously being Metroid.

While many of the best metroidvania games on PlayStation 5 are older releases that are playable via backwards compatibility, including Hollow Knight and Axiom Verge, that doesn't mean there aren't modern releases that deserve just as much praise. Animal Well for example is considered one of the best games of 2024, and Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist is another insanely good modern metroidvania on PS5.

These metroidvanias are all critically acclaimed and playable on PS5, but it's your votes that will determine the order of the rankings.
