Vote up the love interests that attempted to spice up a show, but just left audiences cold.

Sometimes when a show runs a bit too long or a character needs a little excitement, the writers add a new love interest as a way to jazz things up. But what happens when the character added to spice things up only manages to cool things down?

Here are a few instances where a new love interest showed up on beloved show, only for fans to reject the romance. These characters joined the established cast and tried their best to find their place in the story, but didn't pan out. Vote up the lousy love interests who turned down the heat instead of turning it up.

Che Díaz In 'And Just Like That...'

      • Max

When Max rebooted its iconic series Sex and the City, it brought back most of the core characters, but opted to change things up a bit for more modern times. One of the new developments was to have corporate lawyer Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon) - whose romance with bartender Steve Brady (David Eigenberg) was a central plot line through most of the original series - fall for non-binary, stand-up comic Che Díaz (Sara Ramirez). Initially brought in as Carrie Bradshaw's (Sarah Jessica Parker) podcast partner, Che was introduced with no backstory, only as a foil to a relationship most nostalgic fans cherished fondly.

Needless to say, Che wasn't received well.

Though Season 2 attempted to rectify some issues surrounding the problematic character, Che grated on the nerves of loyal fans with their selfish attitude and the adverse effect they seemed to have on Miranda, a once-outspoken advocate for strong women who seemed to warp into a passive wallflower almost overnight.

Although Che and Miranda broke up, Che continue to haunt the series, much to the dismay of fans.

Randy Pearson On 'That '70s Show'

Randy Pearson On 'That '70s Show'

Introduced as a replacement for Eric Forman (Topher Grace) in the eighth season of That '70s Show, Randy Pearson (Josh Meyers) was hired by Steven Hyde (Danny Masterson) to help run the record shop. With Eric's sense of humor and Kelso's good looks, Randy made his way into the group and into Donna Pinciotti's (Laura Prepon) heart, much to the chagrin of fans.

Randy's introduction into the group (and their quick acceptance of "the new guy") seemed forced to fans, who viewed him as an unoriginal blend of the best aspects to two already-popular characters. Overall, Randy just seemed like a lazy maneuver on behalf of the writers to keep viewers interested in That '70s Show after the departure of Grace, and audiences were unwilling to accept the replacement.

Jack Berger On 'Sex and The City'

Jack Berger On 'Sex and The City'

Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) dated many a loser before she landed Mr. Big (Chris Noth). From borderline abusive Russian artists to manic musicians in porkpie hats, the list is long and fairly amusing. But one of the biggest losers - and most hated by the fandom - is Jack Berger (Ron Livingston).

When first introduced, he was considered delightful. Also a writer, the carefree Berger was adorable, humorous, and sparked with Carrie. But fans should have known something was amiss when he immediately jumped from his long-term relationship into one with Carrie, with no downtime.

Quickly, his issues began mounting. Berger's ex-girlfriend baggage was bigger than a mere carry-on; he had a jealous streak a mile wide; he seemed unable to let things go (the scrunchie comment, anyone?); and apparently, he suffered from teeny-tiny testicles, as he was so cowardly when it came to break-ups that he could only do it via Post-It note.

Fans might have liked him at first, but quickly picked up on his villain vibe as soon as he started screaming at his answering machine. After that unhinged display of emotions, the seed of doubt was planted, and it became clear that Berger was no good.

Kennedy On 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'

After the sad demise of Tara Maclay (Amber Benson) on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, an event that transformed Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) into “Dark Willow,” we didn't think we'd see the ginger witch in a relationship again. Or at least so soon.

But apparently a single season was enough time to mourn.

When the potential Slayers were being rounded up for their own protection, Kennedy (Iyari Limon) was among them. She was young, vivacious, and forward, but not much else was known about Kennedy - not even a last name. She was only there to give Willow a love interest and little else.

The character contrast to the beloved Tara rubbed audiences the wrong way, especially as she seemed thrust upon them without any of the usual story buildup we normally get with other Buffyverse characters. Instead, audiences received a superficial character meant to replace a popular series mainstay with no information about said character other than she is a hot, young Slayer who wants to hook up with Willow.

Kennedy was considered a slight on the memory of Tara to many fans, and an insult to the storytelling as a whole.

Zoey Pierson On 'How I Met Your Mother'

Zoey Pierson On 'How I Met Your Mother'

Before fans were crushed by the disappointing ending of How I Met Your Mother, they had to watch Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) date and break up with a large number of potential "mothers" over the years. But few would-be Mrs. Mosbys seemed as grating and taxing on the HIMYM audience as Zoey Pierson (Jennifer Morrison).

Introduced as an opinionated and passionate protestor who takes aim at Ted for the destruction of the Arcadian Hotel in favor of the new Goliath National Bank - which was using Ted's design (of which he had no say or control) - Zoey was a foil for Ted who eventually won his heart. One by one, she also won over each member of his friend group, then turned them against him, followed by an attempt to blackmail him by illegally recording private conversations.

Even though she was married to The Captain (Kyle MacLachlan), Zoey allowed herself to fall for Ted. Despite this obstacle, the two give it a go, but their differences cannot be reconciled and they split soon after.

Fans found Zoey to be argumentative and manipulative, with few enjoyable qualities. Her supposed "sad backstory" of being hated by her stepdaughter did little to win her a following, and in fact, most viewers sided with the stepdaughter.

After actively attempting to destroy Ted's career, cheating on her adoring husband, and acting like a petulant child for most of her time on the show, viewers were happy to see Zoey leave and watch Ted move on to the next trainwreck of a girlfriend.

Lila West (AKA Lila Tournay) On 'Dexter'

Lila West (AKA Lila Tournay) On 'Dexter'

Introduced as Dexter Morgan's (Michael C. Hall) sponsor for a Narcotics Anonymous Group, the boho Lila West (Jaime Murray) annoyed the fanbase almost immediately. Forced into the group by girlfriend Rita Bennett (Julie Benz), who thought Dexter was an addict (she didn't realize he was actually a serial killer), Dexter began to depend on thieving sculptor Lila, whose work embraced the dark side - just like Dexter.

When Rita accused Dexter of having an affair with Lila, he immediately fell into her arms. She seemed to embrace his sinister nature and encourage his “dark passenger.”

As it turned out, Lila had a dark passenger of her own. A former meth addict and current pyromaniac, Lila killed her ex by causing a house fire, and later murdered Sergeant James Doakes (Erik King) in an explosion. She also attempted to kill Rita's children Astor (Christina Robinson) and Cody (Preston Bailey), as well as Dexter.

Audiences were set against Lila long before her fiery tendencies came to light. Her pushy behavior and manipulative manner, paired with the fact that she was an obstacle between Dexter and fan-favorite Rita, made her especially hated.

It's safe to say the fandom rejoiced when she ended up on Dexter's slab.
