Volte for the Raiders of the Lost Ark cast members that have changed the most.

In 1981, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas introduced audiences to one of cinema's most iconic characters when Raiders of the Lost Ark hit theaters. The film revolutionized adventure cinema, grossing over $340 million worldwide against a $20 million budget and earning nine Academy Award nominations. Few fans realize how close we came to a completely different Indiana Jones, with Tom Selleck originally cast before scheduling conflicts with Magnum P.I. forced him to decline the role.

Raiders of the Lost Ark has become a cornerstone of American cinema. The film launched a franchise spanning five movies over four decades, with the 2023 installment, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Here's where the original cast that pursued the Ark of the Covenant ended up after their archaeological adventure.

Harrison Ford wasn't even the first choice to play the now-legendary archaeologist. After Tom Selleck's Magnum P.I. commitments forced him to decline, Ford stepped in and created cinema history. As Indiana Jones, Ford masterfully balanced scholarly intelligence with rugged adventure, creating a character equally at home in university lecture halls or swinging across chasms with his bullwhip.

Since donning the fedora, Ford has enjoyed one of Hollywood's most successful careers. He returned to the Indiana Jones role four more times, confirming 2023's The Dial of Destiny as his final appearance as the character. Beyond Indy, Ford's career encompasses iconic roles as Han Solo in Star Wars, Rick Deckard in Blade Runner, and Jack Ryan in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. He joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus Ross and starred alongside Helen Mirren in the Yellowstone prequel 1923. Ford remains one of Hollywood's most bankable stars with a career spanning over five decades.

  • John Rhys-Davies

As Indy's trusted friend and the best digger in Egypt, John Rhys-Davies brought warmth and humor to Sallah. Spielberg originally wanted Danny DeVito for this part, envisioning a smaller character described as a Sam Jaffe or Gunga Din type. When DeVito couldn't take the role, Rhys-Davies stepped in despite being significantly taller than the character in the script.

Rhys-Davies has enjoyed perhaps the most diverse career of any Raiders cast member. He returned as Sallah in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and decades later in The Dial of Destiny. Between Indy adventures, he gained worldwide recognition as Gimli in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy and voiced Treebeard. His extensive voice work spans numerous animated series and video games, while his television career includes a recurring role on Sliders and appearances in shows like Star Trek: Voyager and Once Upon a Time.

    Karen Allen

As tough-as-nails bar owner Marion Ravenwood, Karen Allen created one of cinema's most memorable female characters. Far from a damsel in distress, Marion could drink men under the table, throw a punch, and match Indy's wit at every turn. Her introduction - downing a shot of whiskey before punching Indiana Jones in the face - remains an unforgettable moment in the film.

After Raiders, Allen appeared in films like Starman, Scrooged, and The Sandlot. While continuing her screen career, she also focused on theater work and founded her own textile company, Karen Allen Fiber Arts. She returned to the Indiana Jones franchise in 2008's Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, reprising her role as Marion and revealing herself to be the mother of Indy's son. Allen has since continued acting in independent films and made a brief cameo in The Dial of Destiny.

As Marcus Brody, the museum curator and Indy's colleague, Denholm Elliott brought scholarly dignity and subtle humor to the role. Though his part in Raiders was relatively small, Elliott established Brody as an important figure in Indy's world.

Elliott was already a respected British character actor before Raiders, with appearances in films like Alfie and A Room with a View. He reprised Marcus Brody in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where his character expanded with more comedic moments. Sadly, Elliott passed away in 1992 from AIDS-related tuberculosis at age 70. His final film appearance came in Noises Off, and he was posthumously referenced in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, where a statue of Marcus Brody stands at Marshall College.

    Ronald Lacey

Ronald Lacey's performance as sinister Gestapo agent Major Toht created an unforgettable villain. With his black leather coat, round glasses, and chilling smile, Lacey's Toht delivered some of the film's most unsettling moments - particularly the scene where he reveals what initially appears to be a torture device but turns out to be a coat hanger.

After Raiders, Lacey continued working steadily in film and television, appearing in Terry Gilliam's Brazil, playing Himmler in Valkyrie, and taking roles in Red Sonja and The Last Days of Patton. Lacey unfortunately passed away in 1991 at age 55 from liver failure. Despite his relatively brief screen time, his performance as Toht remains one of the film's most distinctive elements.

    Paul Freeman

Paul Freeman brought sophisticated menace to René Belloq, Indy's French archaeologist rival working with the Nazis. Freeman's portrayal of Belloq as Indiana's shadowy reflection created a compelling antagonist - a villain sharing the hero's intelligence and passion but lacking his moral compass.

Following his memorable performance (and spectacular demise) in Raiders, Freeman built an impressive career across film and television. He played villain Ivan Ooze in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, appeared in Double Team with Jean-Claude Van Damme, and took roles in Hot Fuzz and the BBC series New Tricks. His extensive theater work includes performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Though never returning to the franchise, Freeman's Belloq remains one of the series' most memorable villains.
