The term meta horror often gets misconstrued with campy, unserious, and often times lackluster films that simply want to poke fun at the genre so it can be considered edgy or counterculture. This ideology couldn't be further from the truth, however. Many meta horror movies push the boundaries of the genre they are satirizing, not because it's cool or hip, but because the filmmakers behind the film each and every single one of these films have massive, bombastic things to say about the genre and cinema as a whole. These films are the cutting edge of the genre and often help shape what is the next popular fad in movie-making, all while telling audiences grand stories that dig deep into the culture and ideologies that are running rampant at the time.

From films that changed the landscape of horror for all time and helped make the genre what we know it as today like Scream and The Cabin in the Woods to some of the earliest films to push back on the notion that horror had to be trapped in a singular box and do what they are told like Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes to film that had powerful and divisive messages to tell its audiences like Funny Games and Peeping Tom, each and every film on this list wanted to push the genre forward, tell magnificent stories, and give the world a big, bold take on not only horror, but Hollywood as a whole.
