Having been out for years now, the PlayStation 5 has amassed quite the collection of fantastic horror games for players of the console to be terrified by. Yes, many of the best PS5 horror games are remakes of older Resident Evil titles, but my goodness are they must-plays, especially if you never touched the originals (let's not forget the original Resident Evil debuted as an exclusive on PlayStation 1). The Dead Space remake from 2023 is another fantastic upgrade of a classic horror title, although it seems doubtful we'll get another one.

If playing remakes doesn't interest you, newer horror games on PS5 like Alan Wake 2 and 2024's MADiSON are games you're going to want to check out. While the scariest games on PS5 are generally the ones with high graphical fidelity and cinematic qualities, there are a few great side-scrolling PlayStation 5 survival horror games that are equally creepy. These include Little Nightmares II, a follow up to the 2017 hit from Tarsier Studios, and Dredge, a 2023 indie release that combines fishing with psychological dread and Lovecraftian horror.

These scary games were all curated based on having high scores on Metacritic, but the order of the rankings are determined by the votes of horror gamers like you. Some games even have multiplayer options!

  • Metacritic Score: 91
Scariest Enemies: Zombies, Cerberus, Lickers, Mr. X
Why Resident Evil 2 is one of the Best PS5 Horror Games: Resident Evil 2 is a masterclass in survival horror, Seamlessly blending nostalgia with modern gameplay innovations, Resident Evil 2 is the first of the modern-era RE remakes to really hit home with the everyday gamer. The game's third-person perspective, stunningly updated visuals, and improved controls reinvigorate the original's terrifying experience, as exploring the Raccoon City Police Department is just as nerve-wracking as ever with its dark corridors and lurking threats keeping players constantly on edge.

  • Metacritic Score: 93
Scariest Enemies: Zombies, Cultists, Giant Monsters, Mutants
Why Resident Evil 4 is one of the Best PS5 Horror Games: The Resident Evil franchise has been one of the biggest and best horror franchises the world has ever seen, and RE4 has been regarded as one of the best the franchise has ever seen. The mixture of unrelentingly scary moments with wacky, almost cartoonish characters somehow managed to work perfectly to create the most unforgettable experience many horror fans have ever seen. As so many Resident Evil games today, a remake of RE4 came, and damn near perfected everything this cult classic had to offer. Enhances graphics, tighter controls, and new modes to play on top of the already beloved story of Leon S. Kennedy's European vacation from hell solidified the franchise as still the cream of the crop when it comes to terror

  • Metacritic Score: 89
    Scariest Enemies: Necromorphs
Why Dead Space is one of the Best PS5 Horror Games: The Dead Space remake had all us 2000s kids giddy with glee as we all were finally going to be able to relive one of the scariest games of the modern era, but nothing could have prepared us for the all out terrifying assault this game had in store for us. Still showcasing the unforgettable sci fi horror story of the original, the new graphics, eerie sound design, and claustrophobic environments made this feel way too real for comfort, and when the Necromorphs showed up, things only got worse. For those who were fans of the original, this will be a nightmarishly pleasant stroll down memory lane, for first timers, prepare for the worst and most terrifying night of your life, and you'll be a-okay.

  • The Last of Us
    4

    Metacritic Score: 95
    Scariest Enemies: Clickers, Cannibals, Runners
Why The Last of Us is one of the Best PS5 Horror Games: The Last of Us sets a cornerstone in narrative-driven horror, blending heartbreaking emotional storytelling with palpable tension so thick it feels like your skin is crawling for the entire runtime. The journey of Joel and Ellie has become one that is bigger than gaming, but still manages to feel close, intimate, and personal, making the terror and dread all the more inescapable. With monster unlike anything the mainstream has ever seen, and some all too real human scares to boot, The Last of Us is more than worth revisiting, and for those who never played, is worth the hype.

  • Metacritic Score: 86
Why Silent Hill 2 is one of the Best PS5 Horror Games: Released 23 years after the original game debuted in 2001, Silent Hill 2 remake is without question the best version of the game. It's a must-play for horror fans who never got to experience it, and with all the upgrades to the visuals, gameplay, and with nearly double the playtime, it's worth it for veterans of the series as well. Will this insanely successful remake be a sign of things to come for the Silent Hill franchise, similar to what Capcom has done with all the Resident Evil remakes? We can only hope the answer is yes.

  • Metacritic Score: 86
    Scariest Enemies: Molded
Why Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the Best PS5 Horror Game: Completely re-inventing the franchise as spinning it an entirely new direction, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is widely regarded as not only one of the best and scariest Resident Evil games, but one of the scariest games of all time. Fusing Texas Chain Saw with traditional RE-type storytelling, this immersive, claustrophobic, and psychologically tormenting game is not for the weak of heart, but continues to be a standout in gaming nearly decade after its initial release.
