When it comes to sappy (and often sad) romantic dramas, novelist Nicholas Sparks pretty much has the genre on lock. Naturally, plenty of movies based on his works sweep viewers off their feet. The author - who later expanded into screenwriting and film producing - kicked off his romance writing career in 1996 with The Notebook (which didn't get adapted for the big screen until 2004). His first film adaptation was with 1999's Message in a Bottle. Sparks's movies aren't for everyone, and most get low ratings from critics, but there's obviously a demand for these swoon-worthy saccharine flicks.

As of 2024, 11 movie adaptations of his works run the gamut of ages, meet-cutes, and melodramatic plot lines. Not every Sparks movie has a happy ending. In fact, many have bittersweet conclusions at the very least, and downright tragic ones in some cases. However, that's why fans love his realistic portrayal of love and loss.

Which Sparks movies warrant the most tears and tissues? That's for you to decide!

Over 500 Ranker voters have come together to rank this list of Every Nicholas Sparks Movie, Ranked By How Much They Sweep You Off Your Feet
This list is dynamically ranked based on user voting. The order reflects the consensus of our voters and is not influenced by paid placements or editorial bias.

  • The Drama: Out of every Nicholas Sparks movie, this might be the most likely to leave you in a puddle of tears. It tells a tale as old as time: “good girl” Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore), the minister's daughter, falls for “bad boy” Landon Carter (Shane West).

Except there's a twist. Jamie has an aggressive form of leukemia. During this 2002 opposites-attract film, Jamie encourages Landon to reach his potential, while Landon teaches her how to live in the moment.

Most Emotional Moments: Long before the term “bucket list” was coined, Landon helps Jamie fulfill as many of her life goals as possible, from giving her a (temporary) tattoo to accomplishing huge life milestones. Of course, the most heartbreakingly beautiful scenes happen when Landon stands by Jamie's side through the worst bits of her cancer treatment, ignoring her insistence that he let her go. But can we talk about Landon naming a star after her? No - we're not sobbing; you're sobbing!

  • The Drama: The Notebook takes Nicholas Sparks fans on the journey of how Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and Allie Hamilton Calhoun (Rachel McAdams) fell in love in the 1940s. An elderly Noah regales the tale of their epic love story to Allie, who has a dementia diagnosis.

Most Emotional Moments: One of the most emotional components comes from the fact that Noah loves Allie just as much after 60 years together as he did when they met. The guy literally builds a house for her and promises to be whatever she needs him to be. And like any good romance movie, they have an epic kiss in the rain

However, the best part of 2004's The Notebook is how real the couple's relationship is. They don't always agree, and they have to work through fights and separations, but they always find their way back to each other. Allie is Noah's home, after all.

  • The Drama: As the title suggests, Julianne Hough's character Katie/Erin finds a safe haven with widowed single dad Alex Wheatley (Josh Duhamel) while she's trying to hide from her abusive husband. But their relationship isn't without its roadblocks, as she lies to Alex about her identity.

Most Emotional Moments: Alex is not exactly chill when Erin comes clean about her actual identity, despite the threat her husband poses - even though it's not her fault. That's pretty rough to watch. However, he makes up for it with a grand gesture of love and a promise to keep her safe. So, we can forgive him. However, the most emotional moment in the 2013 film comes when Erin reads the letter Alex's wife wrote to his future girlfriend before succumbing to cancer.

  • The Drama: Somewhat like The Notebook, The Longest Ride toggles between a relationship in the 1940s and modern day - except this time it’s not the same couple. The '40s couple is Ira (Jack Huston) and Ruth (Oona Chaplin), while Luke (Scott Eastwood) and Sophia (Britt Robertson) take center stage in modern times. The two couples discover similarities between their relationships when Luke and Sophia have an unexpected meeting with Ira in the present day.

Most Emotional Moments: Ira's letter read during his will chronicles how he only had eyes for his wife, as fans are treated to a heartwarming montage of the young couple's happiest moments. The 2015 movie's title derives from a passage in Ira's letter: “The true work of art was the longest ride Ruth and I shared.”

Sophia reading Ruth's letters to Ira in the hospital is also a pretty big tearjerker. And while Sophia and Luke's relationship is swoon-worthy on its own, the most impactful scenes are between Ira and Ruth - particularly because we know going into things that they have a bittersweet ending.

  • The Drama: No, this isn't the Taylor Swift song, but rather a 2010 romantic war drama. It's not easy having a relationship with a soldier and constantly worrying about their safety and when they'll come home.

Young staff sergeant John Tyree (Channing Tatum) falls for Savannah Lynn Curtis (Amanda Seyfried); they begin a whirlwind romance but are soon separated for seven years due to John's deployment. However, they keep in touch all those years with letters and occasional in-person meetings.

Most Emotional Moments: Savannah and John's “I'll see you soon then” parting is meant to be lighthearted. But it's quite bittersweet when you think about it, given how often they're torn apart by circumstances. And what would the movie be without an intensely charged rain kiss? Each of their reunions and departures is a mix of heartwarming and heartbreaking - especially when John tells her all he wants to do is stay with her, and that she's all that matters. Ouch.

  • The Drama: It's normal for military service members to cling onto one solace to get them through the hardships of war. That's precisely what Logan Thibault (Zac Efron) does when he finds a picture of Beth Green (Taylor Schilling) - a complete stranger. Naturally, he has to find the single mom, and they both end up falling for each other.

Most Emotional Moments: The most stressful part of the 2012 movie isn't even between Beth and Logan. Some jerk points a gun at Logan's dog, which is simply disgusting. Luckily, Logan saves the day. When it comes to Logan and Beth, the most wholesome moment is probably when Beth's young son Ben rolls out a carpet for the couple to dance on. Ten points to the small wingman! Then again, Logan's return home (and his reunion with his pup) are up there, too.
